SAE Collegiate Design Competitions
Team SAE wants you! SAE Collegiate Design Competitions put classroom training into action by challenging students in six competitions to design, build, and test the performance of a real vehicle in a competitive environment. For more information, click on "competitions" to find dates, organizers, and results or contact SAE Educational Relations at students@sae.org , phone: 412/772-8535, fax: 412/776-1615.
- Competitions within Texas Section area.
Mini-Baja is a student design competition sponsored by the SAE. It demonstrates how well a student-designed and built off-road vehicle can perform over rough terrain for extended periods of time.
Mini Baja West is one of three competitions held each year by the SAE. Mini-Baja East will take place at Tennessee Tech University, Cookeville, Tennessee on May 14-16. The series will conclude with Mini-Baja Midwest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin June 5-7.
- The Mini-Baja mailing list can be joined by the following procedure:
1. Addressed message to "majordomo@autox.team.net"
Send the following in the Body (not the subject line) of your e-mail message,

- Formula SAE
Auburn Hills, Michigan, May 23, 1999 - The University of Akron, Akron, Ohio
won its first Formula SAE collegiate design competition here today, topping
a field of 100 colleges and universities from the United States, Canada,
Great Britain, and Puerto Rico.
Akron, who finished third in 1998, edged out the Rochester Institute of
Technology, Rochester, New York, by a score of 852.97 to 847.98.
Formula SAE is an annual competition of the SAE
and is cosponsored by a consortium of General Motors Corporation, Ford Motor
Company and DaimlerChrylser. Engineering students conceive, design,
fabricate, and compete with small formula-style cars for prizes totaling
more than $38,000.
Led by team captain Andrew Vrenko, the University of Akron team dominated
the dynamic events to win after trailing in the static events on the first
day.
Formula SAE consists of eight events over a three-day period. Static
events, which include cost analysis, engineering design of the vehicle, and
presentation of the vehicle concept to a panel of judges' scores 325 points
out of a possible 1000.
Dynamic events, which include acceleration run, skid-pad test, autocross
performance, fuel economy, and the endurance track event add up to a
possible 675 points.
Trailing by 40 points after the first day of competition, Akron finished
second in the acceleration run, third in skid-pad, and fifth in autocross to
pull into the lead going into the final event.
Formula SAE is one of eight collegiate design events sponsored by SAE
annually. Other competitions include three Mini-BajaŽ off-road competitions,
two Aero Design competitions to test aircraft design, a Walking Decathlon
for robot vehicles, and a Supermileage contest to determine a vehicle's
maximum fuel economy.
